John Jay Hilfiger’s career in higher education, as music professor, administrator, and biostatistician has spanned four decades. His own education has been eclectic, having studied horn at the Eastman School of Music, psychology (B.S.) at the University of Rochester, and biostatistics (M.S.) at Temple University before completing a M.Mus. at Binghamton University and a Ph.D. in music at the University of Iowa. Hilfiger has been a music professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the University of Minnesota-Morris, and the University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac as well as adjunct music faculty at Cornell University, Binghamton University, Castleton State College and several other institutions. He has also been a music professor and associate dean at Indiana Wesleyan University and Saint Francis University (PA). As a performing musician, he has been a member of the Johnstown (PA) and Altoona (PA) Symphonies and the Tri-Cities (NY) Opera Orchestra and Music Director/Conductor of the Fond du Lac (WI) Chamber Orchestra. Earlier in his career, he worked as a statistical consultant to research scientists at the University of Rochester, The University of Iowa, and Cornell University. As composer and arranger, more than 100 of his works have been published. As scholar, Hilfiger has also been a prolific writer with articles and reviews appearing in such diverse publications as: Journal of the Conductors Guild, Horn Call, Journal of Band Research, NACWPI Journal, Notes, American Statistician, and Acta Veterinaria Scandinavica.
