Johnny (John David) Marks was an American songwriter who specialized in writing popular style Christmas songs although he was Jewish. His top hits other than this one include: Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, Silver and Gold, I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day and Run Rudolph Run. He also has a list of non holiday songs that were top hits in their day.
