Trevarthen

Dick Trevarthen graduated with an undergraduate degree from Duke University, where he studied with Paul Bryan. He then obtained his masters degree in theory from the University of Michigan. Further doctoral studies were at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied composition with George Rochberg. He retired from Western Carolina University having taught mainly theory and low brass. Dick has composed and arranged for various media, especially bands (concert, marching and brass band) and trombone. He started the Smoky Mountain British Brass Band and conducted it for 11 years. He collaborated with Paul and Virginia Bryan on Paul’s biography PB, Who He. Since his retirement in 1998 he his continued his passion in the study of music theory, playing swing piano, and composing and arranging.
